Who wouldn’t love glowing and youthful skin without plastic surgery? With the advancement of medical technology, this is no longer a pipe dream. Many nonsurgical treatments, like laser resurfacing and Sofwave, have been developed in the past century and continue to improve.

In 1952, French doctor Michael Pistor invented a lesser-known technique called mesotherapy.1

What Is Mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is a nonsurgical technique through which medicine and essential nutrients are injected into your skin to resolve certain skin problems.2 Although mesotherapy was initially designed to relieve pain, it’s mainly used as a skin rejuvenation treatment (e.g., mesotherapy facials).3

How Does It Work?

Mesotherapy uses ultrafine needles to penetrate the skin’s middle (dermis) layer for various purposes, including delivering essential nutrients, tightening the skin, and reducing fat, cellulite, and pigmentation.4

The type of solution injected into the skin depends on the skin problem. Injections may include vitamins, minerals, prescription medicines, hormones, enzymes, and herbal extracts. A numbing agent usually isn’t required.5

The solution is injected with a mechanical gun at a depth of 1–4 millimeters every 7–10 days. However, it may require multiple (3–15) sessions to achieve the desired effects.6

While preparing for mesotherapy, you may need to avoid taking medications (like aspirin) that can increase your chances of bleeding and bruising for at least a week before the treatment. Common side effects of mesotherapy are:7

  • Pain
  • Nausea
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Bruising or rash
  • Infection
  • Dark patches or bumps

Luckily, most of these side effects usually resolve within a day, and you can usually resume your regular activities almost immediately. Don’t hesitate to seek medical assistance if the effects persist or worsen over a long period.8

Each mesotherapy session costs around $250 to $600, depending on the type and location of treatment. It’s considered a cosmetic treatment, so most insurance companies are unlikely to cover these costs.9

Who’s It For?

The main uses of mesotherapy include:10

  • Fat removal in the face, hips, thighs, buttocks, stomach, arms, and legs
  • Skin tightening
  • Body recontouring
  • Skin hydration
  • Skin lightening (or decreasing age spots and pigmentation)
  • Treating hair loss (alopecia)
  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Decreasing cellulite

What Are the Benefits of Mesotherapy?

Compared with conventional treatments like liposuction, mesotherapy has many benefits. It’s nonsurgical and almost painless. Since it doesn’t require sedation, it can be performed as an outpatient procedure. Recovery is rapid, and it doesn’t cause scarring. Even mild side effects like swelling and bruising fade quickly.11

Mesotherapy can address multiple skin problems like volume loss, dehydration, hair loss, the effects of aging, etc., and provide a one-stop solution, making it cheaper in the long run. It also provides essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals to your skin, rejuvenating skin health.12
