LED masks, also called light therapy masks, are popular skincare devices with potential benefits to treat skin problems. They use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to deliver specific wavelengths of light to your skin.

LED masks are made of flexible materials. They cover the face with eye, nose, and mouth cutouts. When you turn the device on, the LEDs emit selected wavelengths of light, such as red, blue, or yellow. They penetrate the skin at different depths, interact with skin cells, and trigger a reaction to heal your skin.1

But do LED face masks work, and are they safe for all?

How Do LED Face Masks Work?

LED masks are equipped with different colored LEDs corresponding to specific wavelengths. When you place an LED mask on your face, it emits light onto your skin. The light penetrates different depths or layers of skin and targets specific skin concerns depending on the selected wavelength. Longer wavelengths penetrate deeper skin layers. This is called light therapy or phototherapy.2

There are three types of LED lights used in these masks, which emit specific wavelengths and offer unique skin benefits:

  1. Red light (630 to 660 nanometers): Red LED light is used for anti-aging benefits. It travels deep into the skin layers and stimulates collagen-producing skin cells called fibroblasts. Collagen production reduces signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin elasticity, and rejuvenates skin.3
  2. Blue light (415 to 445 nanometers): Blue LED light is used to prevent acne. It can help kill acne-causing bacteria on the skin’s surface and deep within the pores. It also has anti-inflammatory properties.4
  3. Amber or yellow light (590 to 625 nanometers): Amber or yellow LED light has wound-healing properties. It boosts collagen production and improves skin health. It also helps soothe the skin if you have rosacea or erythema.5

What Is the Safety Profile of LED Face Masks?

LED masks are safe for most people as they don’t emit harmful radiation like UV rays. However, you must follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure safety and avoid potential side effects.

Side effects can include mild redness or irritation, especially if your skin is sensitive. Also, LED lights are bright and can cause eye discomfort due to prolonged light exposure. Most LED masks have built-in eye protection or require goggles to shield the eyes from direct light exposure.6

What Are the Potential Benefits of LED Masks?

LED face masks have the following potential benefits:7

  1. LED face masks promote collagen production and have anti-aging properties.
  2. They manage acne by destroying acne-causing bacteria, leading to clearer skin.
  3. They help reduce redness and inflammation.
  4. They offer a non-invasive and gentle alternative to skincare treatments.
  5. They are suitable for various skin types.
  6. They are convenient and easy to use at home.

LED Masks: Do They Work?

While LED masks provide various benefits, they may not be as effective as targeted professional treatments, like laser therapy. Consistent LED mask use over time alongside skincare tailored to your skin concerns is crucial for noticeable results.

LED masks can help manage issues like acne, signs of aging, and inflammation. However, results can vary depending on the severity of your skin condition. Consulting a dermatologist can help determine the most suitable approach for your skin.8
